Ridesharing in Florida Reduces Drunk Driving

It used to be the case that if one wanted a ride home after a night on the town, they had to hail a taxicab, take the bus or ride with a designated driver. However, with the advent of ridesharing, such as Uber or Lyft, Floridians can use an app to summon a ride home after a night of drinking.

This may be a good thing, as the increase in usage of ridesharing services has correlated with a decline in drunk driving injuries and fatalities in Florida. From 2013 to 2016, the usage of ridesharing apps has gone up, while drunk driving injuries and fatalities have gone down. In 2013, there were 477 deaths and 830 injuries.

In comparison, in 2016 there were 364 deaths and 536 injuries. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, this decrease can be attributed the availability of ridesharing apps, among other factors.

The more options a person has to safely get to and from their destinations, if they plan on drinking, the better. What a person should never do is drive drunk. As the above statistics show, even though the numbers have gone down, drunk driving is still a factor in many fatal car accidents in Florida.

When a person is injured in a drunk driving accident, it can be a long road to recovery. They may need extensive medical care and rehabilitation in order to fully heal, if they can fully heal at all. Moreover, when a person is killed in a drunk driving accident, his or her family must learn to cope with the loss of their loved one. This can take an emotional and financial toll on an accident victim and his or her family. Therefore, those who are injured in a crash caused by a drunk driver may want to discuss their situation with an attorney, to learn more about what can be done to rectify the situation.
