Truck safety features could prevent accidents

Florida residents must share the road with large trucks every day, but this is not always an easy task. After all, it seems like every day there is a news report of a person injured or killed in an accident with a large truck. Motorists may wonder, then, if there is any way to make large trucks safer.

According to a recent AAA study, if large trucks had video-based safety technology systems, these systems could possibly prevent as many as 63,000 large truck accidents annually. In 2015, over 40,000 accidents involved large trucks. Over 116,000 people were injured in such accidents, and over 4,000 people lost their lives.

The technologies examined in the study included video-based systems for monitoring onboard systems, air disc brake systems, automatic emergency brake systems, and systems that would warn the driver if they were departing from their lane. The study found that systems that warn of a lane departure could prevent over 6,300 large truck accidents, preventing over 1,300 people from being injured in such accidents and saving as many as 115 lives annually. Video-based systems for monitoring onboard systems could prevent approximately 63,000 large truck accidents, saving almost 300 people annually and saving over 17,000 people from injuries in such accidents.

Installing automatic emergency brake systems in large trucks could prevent nearly 5,300 large truck accidents, which would prevent 2,700 injuries and save 55 lives. Finally, installing air disc brake systems could prevent over 2,400 large truck accidents and save the lives of 37 people annually, while also preventing over 2,400 injuries.

The study aimed to show to the average driver of a standard automobile that many of those who drive large trucks utilize these safety technologies in order to make motorists more comfortable when sharing the road with large trucks. According to a AAA director, implementing these safety features on large trucks not only saves costs but also prevents truck accidents and addresses the concerns motorists may have with regard to driving near large trucks.

While these safety features could potentially prevent many crashes, it doesn't erase the fact that large truck accidents can be very destructive. Those injured in a truck accident in Florida may want to contact an attorney to determine what steps to take next.
