Drunk driving crash in Florida ends in tragedy

There are many reasons why a person in St. Augustine might enjoy a beer, a glass of wine or a cocktail. They may be at happy hour after work, at a party, at a ball game or simply enjoying a night out on the town. However, not all motorists drink responsibly, and some may cause an accident.

For example, one fatal accident began when an officer saw a truck speed past him in a no-passing zone. The officer then saw the driver pass other vehicles "with a total disregard for public safety." The officer began following the vehicle and, when they reached the top of a hill, the vehicle collided with an SUV.

Four people were inside the SUV, all of whom had to be extracted from the wreckage. A 17-year-old passenger was killed upon impact and another 7-year-old passenger was taken to the hospital but, ultimately, succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the SUV and an 18-year-old passenger were seriously injured.

The driver of the truck was placed in a police vehicle, where an officer said that he smelled of alcohol, his eyes were bloodshot, and he was lethargic and didn't know what had occurred. The driver would not submit to a breath test.

This incident serves as a tragic example of how dangerous drunk driving can be. When a driver breaches their duty to act reasonable and causes an accident that injures or kills another person, the victim or their survivors may want to pursue legal action.

No one deserves to lose their life at the hands of a drunk driver, but, unfortunately, situations like this happen in Florida all too frequently. The survivors of those killed in drunk driving accidents will want to make sure they understand all their legal options, so they can make appropriate choices moving forward.
