Florida is one of top states for hit-and-run crashes

When a motorist is in a car crash, certain steps are usually taken. The motorist will call for medical help, if necessary, call for the police to make an official report and exchange insurance information. While no one expects when they leave their homes that they will be involved in a car accident, the fact of the matter is that many people in St. Augustine are involved in car crashes every day.

However, what happens if a motorist is involved in a car crash and flees the scene without taking any of the aforementioned steps? This is known as a hit-and-run crash, and such situations can be very serious. In the best of circumstances, those involved in the accident suffer only vehicular damage but are otherwise unharmed. Unfortunately, hit-and-run accidents have the potential to be deadly, and, according to one source, Florida sees some of the highest per capita rates of hit-and-run fatalities.

A study conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety looked at hit-and-run accidents nationwide from 2006 to 2016. According to the report, Florida was one of the top three states for hit-and-run fatalities. In 2016 alone, the state had over 200 fatal hit-and-run accidents. And, from 2006 to 2016, the state saw over 1,800 fatal hit-and-run accidents.

These statistics may be startling to Florida residents. Most motorists do all they can to avoid car accidents, but sometimes people have the bad luck of being involved in a collision caused by another motorist.

Motorists should not flee the scene of an accident, even if they think they are at fault. In fact, fleeing the scene of a car accident is against the law and it could prevent injured victims from receiving the medical help they need. Therefore, motorists must uphold their duty to the public to drive with due care and respond appropriately if they are involved in a car crash.
