Meet James Edgar & See How a Former Deputy Now Stands Up for Clients at Canan Law

|

When people call Canan Law, they want more than legal knowledge. They want someone who understands what it feels like to face a crisis and who walks with them through it. That is where James Edgar comes in.

James practices personal injury and civil litigation at our firm, helping people work through disputes, losses, and life-changing events. Before he ever stepped into a courtroom, he spent years serving as a deputy sheriff in Putnam County. In his words, becoming an attorney marked his “second career” and a chance to “do a little bit more for people in a different role.”

To hear his story in his own words, watch the short video below.

Why James Chose Law As His Second Career

James did not start his professional life in an office. He grew up in Keystone Heights, spent much of his teenage years in Palatka, and went on to serve his community as a Deputy Sheriff in Putnam County for 16 years. While working full time, he earned his B.S. in Public Administration from Flagler College in St. Augustine, graduating cum laude in 2009.

During that time, a professor saw something in him and would not let it go. In the video, James shares how that mentor spent years urging him to consider law school. As James recalls, his professor told him, “you have a great mind for it, and I think that you are wasting your talents where you are. I think you could do better mentally.”

For five years, that conversation kept coming back. Eventually, James reached a turning point. He explains how he finally told his professor, “I'm ready for that. Can you please write me a letter?” That moment helped launch him into the next chapter of his life.

After leaving public service, he attended the University of Florida Levin College of Law. He graduated in 2019 with his J.D. cum laude, finished in the top 10% of his class, and joined the Order of the Coif. Those academic achievements reflect the same discipline and drive that carried him through his years in law enforcement.

From Deputy Sheriff To Advocate For Injured People & Businesses

James often describes his work at Canan Law as a continuation of what he did as a deputy. In the video, he explains that at the firm, “I talk to people every day, and I talk to people and deal with individual problems and problems that are affecting real folks lives.” That direct, person-to-person focus has guided him throughout his career.

After law school, he joined a mid-sized litigation firm in Jacksonville, Smith, Hulsey & Busey. There, he defended hospitals and nurses against medical malpractice claims and handled complex civil litigation, including claims ranging from $50,000 to over $1 million. He also gained experience through the University of Florida Self-Insurance Program in 2018.

Today, he brings that background to clients in St. Johns, Duval, and Putnam counties. His practice includes personal injury claims, medical malpractice claims, civil disputes, breach of contract matters, property disputes, and construction defect cases. He spends a large portion of his time on civil litigation, with the rest of his work focused on medical malpractice and personal injury.

James sees clear parallels between his past and present roles. He notes that working at Canan Law “is sort of reminiscent of being a deputy… when I was dealing with people's problems and trying to help them reach a solution.” The difference now, as he puts it, is that he can usually help clients reach “a much more positive solution.”

Rooted In Northeast Florida & Focused On Real People

James has deep roots in Northeast Florida. He has lived and worked in St. Johns and Putnam counties for the last 20 years. He spent many days in St. Augustine even before moving here, and in 2020 he became a permanent resident of the city.

In the video, he reflects on that choice and on joining our firm: “Coming here and coming to this law firm, probably the two best decisions outside of getting married that I've ever made.” That kind of statement tells you a lot about how seriously he takes his work, his community, and the people he serves.

James describes why Canan Law felt like the right home. He calls Canan Law “a well-recognized firm here in town” and notes that Patrick Canan “has been here for 40 years.” That history matters to him. He talks about how the firm allows him to “engage in the community” and “help people and deal with clients, person to person,” which brings “a much more realism” to the work compared to dealing primarily with large companies.

That focus shows up in the way he talks about his day-to-day work. He emphasizes that he deals with problems “affecting real folks lives” and values offering “a much more granular and personal level of service” to each person who trusts him with a case.

How James Fits Into Our Team & Serves Our Clients

At Canan Law, we take a team-based approach to every case. James fits naturally into that model. His years in law enforcement gave him experience with stressful situations, quick decisions, and careful attention to details. His civil and medical malpractice litigation work added a strong foundation in courtroom advocacy and complex disputes.

That combination helps him navigate cases that involve injuries, business disagreements, property issues, or construction problems. When he sits down with someone who has been hurt or drawn into a dispute, he brings both real-world perspective and rigorous preparation to the table.

He also shares our commitment to open communication. In line with our firm values, James focuses on listening first, understanding what a problem means in a client’s life, and then working with our team to pursue a legal path that aligns with that person’s goals and needs.
